In October we will be able to observe two meteor showers, Draconid and Orionids.

Draconids, also unofficially known as the Giacobinids, is a meteor shower whose parent body is the periodic comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner(21P/Giacobini-Zinner). The name comes from the Dragon constellation, with the radiant flux. The 2012 shower occur on October 6–10, maximum will be on October 8. The flow is relatively young and is situated on the orbit a small range around the comet. Conditions for observations are suitable, because the New Moon will be on October 15. Meteors are slow and bright enough to have a reddish color. Radiant RA = 17h28m, Dec = +54 °, v = 20.0 km /s.

The Orionid meteor shower, usually shortened to the Orionids, is the most prolific meteor shower associated with Halley's Comet. The activity of stream is expected from October 2 to November 7, maximum will be on the October 21. Maximum activity occur when the Moon is in the first quarter, and it will slightly shine the sky. Meteors are long, fast, bright white. Radiant all the night will be over the horizon. In the evening it will rise to the horizon along with the constellation of Orion. Radiant RA = 6ch20m, Dec = +16 °, v = 66.0 km/s.

In August 2012 China will for the first time host the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Beijing. This triennial gathering of astronomers from around the world to discuss and debate the most recent discoveries about the universe is an important part of the vitality of our science. More than 3,000 astronomers from around the world are expected to take part in this event. Delegation from Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory in three persons: G. Pinigin, A. Shulga and A. Ivantsov will arrive in China on the 16 of August. They will take part in the special sections and present a number of reports relating to the activities of Nikolaev Observatory.

On June 5th-6th 2012, a transit of Venus across the disk of the Sun took place. The entire transit was visible from every continent except Antarctica. Residents of Europe, including Ukraine, could see only the end of this phenomenon on June 6, just after sunrise. The previous transit of Venus took place on June 8, 2004. Because of features relative position of the orbits of Venus and Earth, this phenomenon is a "pair" with an interval of 8 years, and the distance between pairs can be 106 and 122 years. Past pair of appearances were on December 9, 1874 and December 6, 1882 and the next pair of transits will occur on December 10-11, 2117, and in December 2125.

2012-05-31 12:01:28

On the 6th of June, we will see the last in 21st century transit of Venus across the face of the early morning sun, the next transit will be in December, 2117. The begining of Venus entrence to the disk of the Sun will be at 01: 09: 38, East - at 07: 49: 35 by Kiev time. This event is interesting because we can try to see the " Lomonosov phenomenon" when the disk of Venus actually grew a brief, beautiful halo of light all around its dark edge. This is exactly what you would expect to see if Venus had an atmosphere.

The middle of phenomena will be at 04: 29: 36, till the sunrise, so people of Ukraine will see only the final part of the whole phenomenon. It will be difficult to observe disc of Venus, which is projected on the disk of the Sun, with eyes because the apparent angular size of the Venus disc will be one angular minute. Venus will be visible as small black fleck on the solar disk. So the transit of Venus will begin at 07: 31: 39, and it will over at 07: 49: 35 by Kiev time.
